Things To Do in Guthrie, OK
Guthrie is part of the Oklahoma City Metroplex and the county seat of Logan County, OK. It is nationally significant for its collection of commercial architecture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The town of Guthrie was originally known as a railroad station stop called Deer Creek on the Southern Kansas Railway not long after the Land Run of 1889. Nearly 10,000 people immediately came to the area after establishing this train station. It was designated at the territorial capital and then the first state capital of Oklahoma in 1907. It lost this status in 1910 in a special election, but Guthrie has still been central to the state ever since.
The area is known for the Oklahoma Territorial Museum, which is connected to the Carnegie Library. The museum houses authentic relics preserved from the period in history when the area was originally settled. It tells the tale of the original great landrace to Oklahoma.
The great limestone building known as the Guthrie Scottish Rite is a great place to tour because of its features, windows, and history. The Masons built it with the intent of making it a beautiful piece of architecture that would put Guthrie on the map, and it certainly did.
