Things To Do in Slaughterville, OK
One of the great towns of Cleveland County, OK, Slaughterville is part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. It is mostly made up of homes on acreages, retaining its rural identity as part of its land use. Much of the area around it is wooded, with natural scenic outdoor appeal for visitors and residents alike.
The town gets it’s unique name from grocery store owner James Slaughter, which opened soon after the community’s founding in 1889, right after the local area was opened to settlement.
The town was formally incorporated in 1970 to avoid annexation by neighboring towns.
Today, the local area is known for many great places to visit, including Van’s Pig Stand, one of the best restaurants in Oklahoma. It serves quality barbecue and burgers for the entire family. Whispering Pines Restaurant is very similar in terms of restaurant quality, but it also serves as a bed and breakfast and a venue for locals.
A few museums are local, as well. The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History has much about the local cultures and natural outcroppings, including a piece about the rose rock natural deposits. The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is one of the local treasure troves that features antiquities, fine art, and multiple different styles throughout the ages.
