Don’t let deteriorating pavement compromise YOUR OK property’s safety and curb appeal!

Whether you’re dealing with cracked surfaces, potholes, or simply aging pavement, Arrow Asphalt specializes in providing paving services like asphalt overlay across the greater Oklahoma City area and the Sooner State.

What is Overlay, and When Is It Used?

Asphalt overlay is an efficient method for renewing an aging surface. A new layer is applied over the existing pavement. Instead of completely removing the old surface, the existing layers serve as a strong foundation for the new surface. However, milling may be necessary before an overlay can be applied if the pavement has suffered severe damage, such as rutting, potholes, or significant cracking.

Arrow’s Asphalt Overlay Process

Our commitment to using the best materials and the latest paving techniques ensures that your parking lot or driveway will withstand Oklahoma’s challenging weather conditions.

1. Property Evaluation: Before beginning any overlay project, our paving team thoroughly assesses the existing pavement. Not all surfaces are suitable for an overlay. If there are major issues like large potholes, root damage, or poor drainage, the surface may need removal or regrading to ensure long-term durability.

2. Asphalt Milling: We mill 1 to 3 inches off the top for damaged surfaces, removing compromised material. This creates a level surface for better bonding. The milled material is recycled in other installation projects for sustainable paving.

3. Base Repair: In areas with a weakened base, we rebuild it using layers of aggregate and tar, creating a strong foundation to prevent future issues.

4. Overlay Paving: After preparation, we apply a 1.5 to 2-inch asphalt overlay, rejuvenating the surface with a smooth, durable finish that endures Oklahoma’s weather.

Other Paving Situations: Asphalt Over Concrete

In some instances, overlay can be applied over a deteriorating concrete surface. While concrete does not compress and compact, it is still possible to cover it with a fresh layer.

However, there are unique challenges to this approach. The expansion joints in concrete can cause the pavement to shift over time, potentially leading to cracks or bumps. Although these cracks won’t necessarily cause pavement failure, they require regular maintenance, such as crack sealing, to ensure the surface remains water-resistant.
